The First Ask Celebrates Wins in Georgia Legislative Elections

Washington, DC – Following yesterday’s general election all of the votes in Georgia have been tallied, and five of The First Ask endorsed candidates have won their races. Three of them flipped seats currently held by Republicans.. Together, these women helped put Georgia Democrats on track to win a state House majority for the first time in more than two decades.

The First Ask congratulates the following candidates on their victories:

  • Danielle Bell, Georgia HD-44

  • Beth Fuller, Georgia HD-53

  • Michelle Kang, Georgia HD-99

  • Timoria McQueen Saba HD-68

  • Laura Murvartian, Georgia SD-48

Going into Election Day, Democrats needed a net gain of 10 House seats to take control of the chamber for the first time since 2004. . Five of The First Ask’s endorsed candidates for the Georgia State House ran in Republican-held districts, and three of them won. Those three flips account for nearly a third of the seats Democrats needed, putting The First Ask candidates at the center of the power struggle in the Georgia House.

In the state Senate, Laura Murvartian’s victory over Senator Shawn Still in District 48 brings Democrats one seat closer to a majority.

Caroline Welles, Executive Director of The First Ask, issued the following statement:

“For twenty years, Georgia Republicans have treated the state House as a given. Last night, voters told them otherwise. Our candidates ran on lowering costs, protecting health care, and strengthening schools– and they will deliver on those promises when they assume power in the Golden Dome in January. The First Ask is proud to have been able to move the needle in Georgia.”

These wins are just part of a larger national project, with The First Ask electing 28 women this year.

The First Ask is a PAC dedicated to electing Democratic women to state legislatures nationwide. The organization advocates for proportionate gender representation in state legislatures and progressive change.
